The well-known ‘golden voice of da’wah work’, Moulana Muhammad Umâr Palanpuri (RA) passed away on Wednesday, 21 May 1997 at 1.30pm in Nizamuddin, Delhi. The previous day he had gone with other elders of the Markaz, for an Ijtima in Agra, a five-hour journey by car. He fell ill en-route and returned to Delhi where he was immediately admitted to hospital. He was discharged on Wednesday morning feeling much better. Later during the day he had a heart attack and passed away.
Moulana (RA) was orphaned at an early age and was left solely to the care of his pious mother. He showed signs of a brilliant mind front a young age. This prompted his uncle to help him pursue a secular education. The Moulana’s mother however had other plans. She wanted her son to devote his energies to acquiring the knowledge of Dîn. That is what happened.
The Moulana (RA) studied at Darul Ulûm Deoband, from where he graduated with marks which impressed even his teachers.For the purpose of tazkia [purification of the soul], he approached Shaikhul Hadîth Moulana Zakariyya Kandalvi (RA) who in time granted the Moulana khilafat.
He visited the UK several times. On each occasion he accompanied the late Amîr of the Tablighi Jamaat, Moulana Inamul Hasan (RA). His last visit was in 1994 when he attended the international gathering in Dewsbury. On this visit he related the following story. As a young man his mother would ask him to read to her. On one such occasion, overjoyed, she prayed, “May you see the day when you are speaking and thousands of people are listening, as opposed to now, when your mother is your sole listener.” Tears welled in his eyes when Moulana (RA) narrated this incident. The mother’s prayer, as the world witnessed, was answered to the letter.
Moulana (RA) was sixty-five years old. He had memorized the Qur’ân during his old age – a remarkable achievement. Hundreds of thousands of people have benefited immensely from his discourses and pious company. He was erudite and a devoted saint of Allâh, yet his humility cast a veil over his impressive ‘god-fearing’ qualities. His demise brings to three the number of great personalities the world of Tabligh has lost in the last two years – others being, Moulana Izhaar (RA) and Hazratjee Moulana Inamul Hasan (RA).
May Allâh grant them Jannah and replace them with noble personalities. Amîn.
For the doubters, Maulana (RA) used to say:
جیسی کرنی ویسی بھرنی ، نہ مانے تو کر کے دیکھ
جنت بھی ھے دوزخ بھی ھے نہ مانے تو مر کے دیکھ
What you sow shall you reap; if you don’t accept then test it by doing!
Jannah exists and Jahannum exists; if you don’t accept then test it by dying!
Maulana Abdurrahman Patel mentioned this story:
Once, Maulana Umar Palanpuri went, from his locality, to drop off a jamaa’at at Nizamuddin. (The jamaa’ah was from his locality, they were going out through Nizamuddin, Maulana was just dropping them off).
On reaching there, the elders ordered him to also join the jamaa’at. So, he joined them and remained with them until they were returning back home.
But, before they returned, Maulana Umar recieved a letter from Nizamuddin, saying that a nearby location (forgot its name) was having its first ijtima, and he should go there. Thus, when the jamaa’at returned home, Maulana Umar continued to the ijtima.
When he returned from the ijtima to Nizamuddin, the elders told him that a jamaa’at was being formed to Diyaar al-Muqaddasa, and he was the best person to join the jamaa’at. So he went with that jamaa’at too, until their time ended.
He had went to drop off a jamaa’at to Nizamuddin but ended up spending a year and half in the Path of Allah !!
A group of Arabs in America vistied Maulana Umar Palunpuri (RA) and questioned the perception that Tableeghi Jamaat is against Afghan Jihad and Maulana Umar Palunpuri (RA) replied, “We believe that even the most smallest of actions is rewarded provided that it is done with the sincerity of Allah (SWT) and according to Sunnah of Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam)”
Shaykh (Maulana) Masood Azhar (HA) says,…
…And the second (such) scene I witnessed in Raiwind. Hazrat (Maulana) Umar Palunpuri (RA), may Allah (SWT) forgive him and increase his status I was with my Shaykh and serving him when the old workers permitted us to stay with Hazrat (Maulana) Umar Palunpuri (RA).
Thus the room was divided in half with pitched tents with half of the room with Hazrat (Maulana) Umar Palunpuri (RA) and the other half with my Shaykh.
As with the habit of students to observe the habits of the Mashaykh I also used to watch the routine of Hazrat (Maulana) Umar Palunpuri (RA). Approximately 45 minutes before the start of the talk he used to cover himself with a sheet and used to cry so loudly that the his cries were heard all over. The person who used to cry and beseech Allah (SWT) for 45 minutes then he can only be Palunpuri (RA) and nobody else.
Then off course the lives of millions will change upon hearing his words.
Then off course people will be granted the ability to repent upon hearing his words.
Then off course the curtains of heedlessness will be torn apart upon hearing his words.
Sins are not smashed easily; heavy blows are needed to smash it to bits.
People will say that I don’t need Allah (SWT) I need Layla (my beloved) but when the speaker is such that he cries for 45 minutes or 1 hour and then sits on the pulpit then the situation turns and changes!
The authenticity of the story below is unknown although it has been reported elsewhere in a similar way, the only difference being that the person who had the dream was not Shaykh as-Sudais.
One night, Shaikh Abdurrahman Sudais (Imam of Masjidul Haraam) saw the Prophet (SAW) in his dream. In the dream, someone’s janaaza was coming, and Rasulullah (SAW)was awaiting.
Shaikh Sudais asked who the janaaza was for, to which the Prophet (SAW) replied that this was Umar Palanpuri, of al-Hind.
On waking up, Shaikh Sudais learned that Maulana Umar Palanpuri had passed away. He then wrote a letter of condolence to Maulana Umar’s son, Maulana Yunus Palanpuri, in which he narrated this dream.
