There are plenty of reasons to avoid getting hooked on American Idol, and not all of them have to do with bad singing. For example, it may cost you your life. That's right; the show lasts two hours, and it turns out that viewers under the age of 40 who watch lots of television double their risk of death, according to a new study just published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This certainly isn't the first study to find a link between enjoying too much TV and early death, but the new research adds some dimension to the old data.

Every hour spent watching TV each day increases the risk of dying from heart disease by almost a fifth, say scientists.

TV addicts were warned their lifestyle also increased the risk of death from other causes including cancer and the chances of dying early from heart attacks and strokes.

Researchers in Australia monitored 8,800 adults for six years to see what impact watching TV had on their long term health.

Every hour in front of the box pushes up the risk of dying from heart disease by 7 per cent, according to a study.

Those looking at their favourite progammes for four hours a day - the UK average - face a 28 per cent rise in the risk.
