NETTLE HERB One of the Most Valuable Herbal Remedies

Saturday, June 25, 2016

Nettle herb, or Urtica dioica, is found in every single state in the US except Hawaii. While most consider it a pesky weed, herbalists understand its true value. The nettle herb is considered to be so powerful by some that legends say Jetsun Milarepa, one of Tibet's most famous yogis and poets, lived on diet of nothing but nettle tea for years, which, according to legend, caused his skin turn green. Even further back, reports have been found that ancient Egyptians used a nettle infusion for the relief of arthritis and lumbago pains. Even Hippocrates and his followers reported 61 different remedies using nettle.

Wednesday, December 30, 2015

The United States is well known as an international leader in eating sugary, non-nutritious diets and for all the health problems they create. But people who live in other nations may not be too far behind in developing similarly poor eating habits. According to new research, consuming sugar-laden foods has become increasingly common all across the globe.

Sleeping Position Matters

Friday, December 11, 2015

On the dance floor, each of us moves in a unique way, as if we came into the world pre-programmed with a certain movement style. The same thing holds true at bedtime. Some of us lay on our backs stiff as soldiers all night, others curl up fetal style, and yet others roll belly down. It turns out that the sleeping position we opt for impacts health, plus, some experts think it reveals something about psychological makeup.

Hand-Grip Strength and Your Heart

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Do you have a nice firm handshake, or is it not quite what it used to be? Are you the one in your family to whom everyone passes bottles and jars that require opening, or are you the first one to hand over the pesky pickle jar to someone else? None of these things might seem like a big deal, but if your hand-grip strength is now weaker than you remember, it just might signify a much larger problem. According to new research, a drop in your ability to grip may be a predictor of future heart disease.

Itty Bitty Bullies

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Our Hollywood-reinforced image of a bully is usually the nasty big kid on the playground in middle school. But we know that bullies are often present in high schools and even among adults as well. However, bullying behavior may start long before we might expect. New research is providing evidence that bullying appears to begin when children are barely out of preschool.

TV More Deadly Than Computers

Thursday, August 7, 2014

There are plenty of reasons to avoid getting hooked on American Idol, and not all of them have to do with bad singing. For example, it may cost you your life. That's right; the show lasts two hours, and it turns out that viewers under the age of 40 who watch lots of television double their risk of death, according to a new study just published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This certainly isn't the first study to find a link between enjoying too much TV and early death, but the new research adds some dimension to the old data.

Enzymes Defined and How to Buy Them

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

In today's newsletter, Enzymes Defined, we're going to take an extremely detailed look at supplemental enzymes. This is a long newsletter, but also a very important one. If you're looking for a simple report that skips the details and says "Buy this," you'll be disappointed. In fact, we don't even get to cover the details of buying digestive enzymes and systemic proteolyic enzymes in this report. This newsletter is just about understanding ...

Vitamin D for Cancer

Thursday, June 19, 2014

Exposure to sun at Buluh Beach, Sedili Kecil
Fighting cancer is a tough battle, no matter where it occurs in the body. The disease itself--as well as just about every form of treatment for it--can take a heavy physical toll. But patients strive hard to do what it takes to eliminate the malignancy so they can hopefully live for many years afterward as a survivor. To that end, it appears that new research has found a safe and natural way to increase the odds of beating cancer…by increasing our intake of vitamin D.

Long-Term Effects of Pre-Pregnancy Nutrition

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Everyone knows the expression "eating for two." Although it's often used as an excuse to double one's caloric intake, it is really a reminder that you should strive for a well-balanced, nutritious diet during pregnancy. Usually, this doesn't come up until your first appointment with your obstetrician to confirm conception when matters such as eating well, taking prenatal vitamins, and what foods are to be avoided are discussed. But now it seems we should be having these kinds of conversations before we even start trying to become pregnant. According to new research, nutrition and a woman's diet just prior to and at the time of conception may have a permanent effect on the DNA of her child.

Another Reason to Avoid Nail Salons

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Just last year, we wrote about the health risks posed by nail salons, including most of the so-called "natural," non-toxic establishments. In salons without great ventilation, customers and staff breathe in harmful fumes from the polishes; plus, when you get a ‘mani' or a ‘pedi,' there's some danger of absorbing toxins through the skin.

Pomegranate Fights Cancer

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

If an apple a day doesn't keep the doctor away, its look-alike cousin the pomegranate just might. A new study has found that a substance in pomegranates can slow or even stop the growth of breast cancer tumors. The study, just published in Cancer Prevention Research, found 10 phytochemicals in pomegranates that seem to inhibit the growth of estrogen-responsive breast tumors.

Hobbies Help Your Career

Friday, June 6, 2014

Lots of people are content to just sit around watching television in the evening and on weekends when they have free time. But being a couch potato does nothing for you, mentally or physically. If you invest some of that leisure time in a hobby--even things like writing poetry or crocheting that require no exercise or activity--it might boost your creativity.

Grandkids Boost the Brain

Friday, May 30, 2014

"I've been a godmother loads of times, but being a grandmother is better than anything." --Vivien Leigh

Being a parent is a tough job. You are on call 24 hours a day, every day, trying to raise your children to become good, responsible, independent people. Some say the reward for all that hard work is becoming a grandparent, as that is the time you get to enjoy having fun with the little ones without all of the day-to-day tantrums and tears.

MERS VS the Post-Antibiotic Era

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

I used to think that Halloween came in October, complete with scary jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, and witches on broomsticks. Apparently I was wrong, and it now also comes in the spring. How else to explain all the scary headlines about MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) in the media over the last few weeks? You would think the world was about to come to an end, that MERS was on the verge of wiping out millions of people in the days ahead.

Date: 12/13/2011 Written by: Beth Levine

Teenagers are not known for having the best eating habits. Instead of nutritious fare, they tend more towards the empty calories of snacks and fast foods. One would hope that during these years while they are still living at home with their parents, they would possibly have a shot at decent nutrition.

Human Anatomy & Physics of Muscles

Thursday, January 31, 2013

In our last newsletter, we examined the physiology of the human muscle system from an alternative health perspective. In this newsletter, we continue with that theme by exploring both the physics of muscle movement and the code that underpins muscle anatomy.

And no, the goal is not to teach you the names of all 799 skeletal muscles in the body, but rather to show you "how" the muscles are named. Muscle names are not just a bunch of random Latin words, but rather, are named according to a set of informal rules; and once you understand those rules, you can pretty much tell where any muscle is located and what it does.

By itself, though, this is not important; but once armed with the information, we will then be able to talk about exercise -- and exactly how to exercise our muscles to accomplish specific goals and achieve optimum health. >

A Five-Pronged Approach to Chronic Joint Pain and Inflammation

Sunday, December 25, 2011

Joint pain is an interesting animal. Everyone has it at some point. For many people, it's only an occasional problem -- easily taken care of by a single aspirin or some Ben Gay (or buy some Essential Relief™ for that matter). For others, though, it's a chronic problem, reducing them to a lifetime of dependency on high doses of NSAIDS or prescription drugs. >

Diet Soda Dangers

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Written by: Beth Levine

February is American Heart Month, and for the fourth year now, Diet Coke is supporting the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's The Heart Truth campaign to raise awareness and funds for women's heart health education and research. Kind of ironic, though, since drinking diet soda has recently been identified as a possible risk factor for heart attacks and stroke. >
