The Islamic Perspective of Reading Harry Potter and Other Novels

Saturday, October 6, 2012

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.

Islam emphasizes to preserve and conserve one’s Iman. A Muslim’s Iman is his most important asset and should be unwavering, steadfast and resolute. Anything that may compromise one’s Iman should be avoided.

Reading fiction/ fantasy is in itself not impermissible. However, it is an undeniable and incontrovertible fact that everything a person reads affects a person psychologically and at times even physically. Books and literature have the power to bring out all sorts of emotions and reactions in people; laughter, frowning, shrieking out, worrying, rejoicing, mourning and an array of emotions. Some books are so powerful that they leave an impression in a person’s life; the way one talks, acts and conducts oneself with other people. Reading takes people away from reality. It places a person in the middle of a situation so vivid that the person doesn't even know what is going on in the real world. They capture a person’s imagination and heart through a combination of captivating and engrossing plots and characters; so much so that the characters take up their own place in one’s head.

A well-written book has the ability to affect ones moral code; it can blur the lines between what is right and wrong, moral and immoral, acceptable and outright unethical. If a person feels that a book is impacting him in a negative way; affecting ones Iman or psychologically; the person should immediately stop reading the book.

Harry Potter is a series that has its basis deep rooted in magic; something that is expressly prohibited to learn and practice in Shariah. It should be kept in mind that in Islam, there is no differentiation or separation in magic; no ‘good magic’ in contrast to ‘dark arts’. All magic is prohibited. If a person upon reading this series; or any other series; starts to revere, admire and become in awe of magic, he should stop as this is in conflict with a Muslim’s beliefs.

One may read such books to increase ones linguistic skills on condition the reading does not affect ones Imani (religious) values and thinking. If ones Imani values and thinking will be wrongly influenced, then it is prohibited to read such books.

Rights of children

Saturday, May 14, 2011

Khat by Hamdi Ibrahim Abdul BakiWhat are the rights of wife, children on the man.

Praise be to Allaah.

1 – The wife’s rights:

These have been discussed in detail in the answer to question no. 10680

2 – The children’s rights.

Allaah has given children rights over their parents just as the parents have rights over their children.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: “Allaah has called them abraar (righteous) because they honoured (barru) their fathers and children. Just as your father has rights over you, so too your child has rights over you.

Al-Adab al-Mufrad, 94.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, according to a hadeeth narrated by ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar,
“… and your child has rights over you.”

[Muslim, 1159].

Honouring a Faasiq

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Khat by Hasan Celebi
RASULULLAH (SALLALLAHU ALAYHI WASALLAM) said:
"When a faasiq is praised, the Arsh of Allah shudders."
A faasiq is a flagrant violator of the Shariah. When such a person is praised or honoured, the Wrath of Allah Ta'ala descends. When even the magnificent Throne of Allah Ta'ala shudders, it will be easy to understand the gravity of the crime of honouring a faasiq. For this reason it is haraam to allow a beardless person, i.e. one who shaves or cuts his beard, to lead the Salaat or become the Muath-thin or to be a Musjid/Madrasah trustee or to allow a beardless qaari the honour of the Musjid platform to recite to the musallis as was the case recently when a faasiq qaari from Egypt was honoured in many Musaajid of the country.

Ibn Mubaarak and the Barkat of Halaal Food

Friday, April 1, 2011

[caption id="attachment_966" align="alignleft" width="233" caption="Khat by Hasan Celebi"][/caption]

Most Muslims must have heard the name of the illustrious Saint, Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Mubaarak (rahmatullah alayh). His father, Mubaarak, was the slave of the Qaadhi of the City of Ray. The piety of his slave had made an indelible impression on the Qaadhi who was a very wealthy and prominent member of the community. Inspite of high-ranking and elite members of the community proposing marriage for his daughter, the Qaadhi married his daughter to his slave, Mubaarak.

The Qaadhi Saheb too was a pious man, hence he made the decision to have his daughter married to his slave. Taqwa was the criterion for his decision. After the bride was delivered to her husband Mubaarak, the now freed slave, he did not consummate the marriage for forty days. Both he and his wife remained in Ibaadat for this period. Meanwhile Mubaarak ensured that he fed his wife with halaal tayyib food for forty days.

In Islam, why dogs are considered impure animal

In Islam, why dogs are considered impure animal?

All creatures are the creation of Allah Ta'ala and do deserve the recognition of being a creation of the Almighty. As much as Muslims detest even the sight of pigs - it is the creation of Allah Ta'ala - and because Allah has placed life into it, we cannot inflict pain nor torture the pig. Similarly Allah Ta'ala created the dog from among His creation. This does not mean that we should love the dog. It is perhaps the indoctrination of the Western culture that 'The dog is Man's best Friend'.

Do Not Despise The Sinners

Sunday, March 20, 2011

By Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani
Translated by Shaykh Yusuf Laher

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
“That person who taunts and ridicules his Muslim brother over a sin from which he has repented, will not die until he himself commits that same sin.”
For example, you come to know that a certain person committed or was involved in a particular sin and you also know that this person has repented from it. To think low of him or to taunt or ridicule him because of that sin, by saying something like: “You are the one who was involved in certain evil actions”, is in itself a sin.

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani: The Hadith of The Two Singing Girls In The House of The Prophet

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

[caption id="attachment_885" align="alignleft" width="192" caption="Kufi by Lutfi"][/caption]

By Ustadh Abdus Shakur

Imam al-Bukari narrated in his Sahih, in the chapter concerning The Two Eids , from ‘A’isha رضي الله عنها who said:

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)came into my room when there where with me two girls who were singing/chanting [تغنّيان ] the songs [or poems] or Bi‘àth [the day of a great battle between the two Arab tribes of Medina before the advent of Islam]. He laid down on his mat and turned away his face and Abu Bakr came in and scolded me and said, “[What is this?] The sound of Satan in the presence of the Prophet( صلى الله عليه وسلم)!” He said [The Messenger of Allah"], “Leave them alone.” When he was not paying attention, I signaled to them and they went out.

Imam Muhammad Zahid al-Kauthari (1371 A.H; Cairo): Hijab & Western influence in Muslim Lands

Worldview of the Early Muslims - a research

Pengenalan

Incumbency of Taqleed

Friday, March 4, 2011

Taqleed in the Shariah, as opposed to Admut Taqleed, means to follow the Qur'~n and the Sunnah as understood, interpreted, practised and transmitted to the Ummah by the Sah~bah (Companions) of Rasulullah (sallall~hu alayhi wasallam).

Taqleed which literally means to be fettered; to be tied and to follow, refers to a special and specific type of following in Islam. It refers to the rigid following of the Qur'~n and Sunnah as commanded by Allah Ta'ala Who says:
"O People of Im~n! Obey Allah and obey the Rasool....."

Numerous Qur'~nic ~y~t (verses) and Hadith narrations command this strict obedience and following which are known as Taqleed in the terminology of the Shariah.

The Ummah's Humiliation — A Manifestation of Allah's Punishment

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

By Mujlisul Ulama of South Africa
"Then when there came the first of the two promises (of Divine Punishment), We sent against you servants unto Us who were most powerful in warfare. Then they penetrated the homes. Indeed it was a decree executed."

[Surah Bani Israaeel, aayat 5]
"When the final promise (of Divine Punishment) came, (it came) so that they could (the kuffaar) disfigure your faces and enter the Musjid (i.e.Musjidul Aqsa) as they had entered the first time, and so that they could utterly destroy whatever they overran."

The difference between taking the kaafirs as friends and seeking theirhelp

Saturday, February 26, 2011

[caption id="attachment_634" align="alignleft" width="192" caption="Kufi by Lutfi"][/caption]

Praise be to Allaah.

Taking the kaafirs as friends (muwaalaah) means supporting them and helping them in matters of kufr, such as the Muslims fighting alongside the kuffaar, such as when the kaafirs launch an assault against a Muslim country and a Muslim befriends them and supports them and helps them in fighting against that country, whether that is with weapons or by supplying them with anything that will help them to fight the Muslims. This is muwaalaah, or a type of friendship that is haraam,

Hadith - Mengasihi isteri mukminah dan hak mereka

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Dari Abu Hurairah r.a. meriwayatkan bahawa Rasulullah s.a.w. bersabda,
"Bukanlah sifat seorang mukmin lelaki, membenci akan isterinya yang mukminah. Jikalau kerana satu-satu tabiat buruknya yang tidak disukai, namun ia masih tetap ada sifat-sifat yang lain yang terpuji."
[Muslim 3645]

Does he have to tell his second wife that he is married

Saturday, January 22, 2011

I married a foreign woman after she became Muslim in a shar‘i marriage in accordance with the laws of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and I concealed from her the fact that I was married before. Is my marriage legitimate or do I have to tell her that I am married and that she is the second wife? Please note that I concealed this matter from her because the country in which we live does not allow plural marriage.

Ruling on singling out ‘Ashoora for fasting

Is it permissible to fast ‘Ashoora’ only without fasting the day before or the day after?
Praise be to Allaah.

Ibn Taymiyah said: Fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ is expiation for one year, and it is not makrooh to single out this day for fasting. Al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 5.

Wasiat Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. kepada Saidina Ali r.a.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Wahai Ali,
Bagi orang mukmin ada 3 tanda-tandanya
1) Tidak terpaut hatinya pada harta benda dunia
2) Tidak terpesona dengan pujuk rayu wanita
3) Benci terhadap perbualan dan perkataan sia-sia

Wahai Ali,
Bagi orang alim itu ada 3 tanda-tandanya

Menghormati Azan
