The four Madhabs and the madhab of Rasoolullah ( part 1 ) - Sheikh Mumtaz ul Haq

Saturday, June 22, 2013

The literal meaning of the word Madhab in Arabic means "a path".
In Islamic teachings the word "madhab" has been used to describe the different views taken by the various reputable learned scholars of the early era. Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah throughout his book has made reference to the "Madhab" of various learned people and imams including, Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Shafi'ee, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, Imam Aozaa'iee, Imam Ishaq and others rahimahumullah. Nowhere and not even ONCE does he refer to the "MADHAB OF RASOOLULLAH" sallallaho alaihe wasallam, because people of knowledge, understanding , piety and sincerity were all aware that the issues in which these different madhaahibs differ are matters of ijtehad and not clearly specified issues, so inevitably there will be differences.

Allah has stated in the Quran,
"If Allah so wanted , then he would definitely have made all the people as one ummah. And they will continue to have differences."
[Surah Hood, 11: 118]
In fourteen centuries of Islamic history , there have been many great scholars, some mentioned above as well as the likes of Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Ibn Taimiyah, Ibn Qaiyam rahimahumullah and many many others but nobody ever used the term "Madhhab of Rasoolullah" AND nobody ever talked about UNIFICATION of these madhaahibs.

Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips has recently been openly preaching and trying to champion this philosophy, presenting it to be the solution of the divisions in the ummah. Had this been the case then surely some of the greatest scholars of the ummah, the likes of whom will never be born again would have definitely written , spoken and presented this idea.

Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips as well the others who might share a similar view might be learned people but I don't think anybody in the world ranks them in the same league as the great imams of the golden ages of Islam so proving that this whole idea of the "Madhab of Rasoolullah" being different to the four established madhaahibs is a flawed concept.
